What
Needs Doing
By Lois Lenz
But
what are you going to do?
I don't know, Otie.
We'll have to see what needs doing.
Maybe
I'll wash the dishes,
or tell a joke, or bring you some soup, or play cards with
Freddie.
If
you want to talk, I can listen.
If you don't want to talk, maybe I can answer the telephone.
If
tempers are flying, maybe I can soothe them.
If
you're not sure you're doing what's best, maybe I can tell you you're
doing just fine.
If
you have to get some rest, Maybe you'll trust me to sit by
her bed.
If
the commotion's getting to you, maybe I can steer you
in-laws out to dinner.
If
you're angry, maybe I can say that's OK.
If
you can't bring yourself to tell her goodbye, maybe I can make it easier
by saying it first.
If
your strength is failing, maybe I can reach out my hand and keep you
going.
If
you're falling apart, maybe I can put my arms around you and hold you
together.
If
you're feeling helpless, maybe we can pray together.
We'll
have to see what needs doing.
Maybe
you won't need me for anything!
Maybe
it'll happen so quickly or you'll have so much support you won't even
need me in your house.
Maybe
I'll just call or stop in to remind you I'm standing by, ready to help
if you do need me.
We'll
have to see what needs doing. |
