Mountain Valley Hospice House
The Nancy Dowd Hospice Home
In 2005, Mountain Valley Hospice opened a hospice residence - a home for individuals requiring all stages of care from assisted living through total care. The home, honoring the memory of the founding executive director, Nancy Dowd, is located in a rustic setting within the city of Gloversville.
Resident Rooms
Each of the eight (8) private rooms is equipped with a bed, armoire, closet, recliner or chair and private bathroom. Residents are encouraged to bring personal articles, such as pictures, knick-knacks, small religious symbols, etc. to make the room feel more like home. Cable TV is provided in each room free of charge, and the use of a VCR or DVD can be arranged.
Medical Care
A nurse and a home health aide provide around-the-clock care to residents. In addition, the comprehensive care provided by the hospice team is provided to those living in the residence, including:
• Hospice medical director consultation
• Support for emotional and practical issues by a social worker
• Support for spiritual issues by a hospice chaplain
• Assistance, support and companionship by trained volunteers
• Consultation and support in areas of nutritional counseling, physical therapy,
• occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, speech therapy and audiology
• Bereavement and grief counseling by a qualified counselor
Additionally, your primary care physician is consulted regularly regarding your care, just as in your home.
Meals
Meals are customized to meet the individual needs of residents. Residents and their families are invited to assist in meal preparation. The family is encouraged to bring favorite foods.
Laundry
Resident laundry is done by staff. Family members may access the washer and dryer in the house as needed.
Visitors
Visitors are always welcome. Generally, visiting hours are unrestricted. Accommodations are available for family members to spend the night. Staff may at times limit the number of visitors if it is in the best interest of the resident or other residents. Children are welcome and must be accompanied by an adult.
Common Areas
The Great Room, Tranquility Room, kitchen and dining room, as well as the patios and grounds are available to all residents and guests.
Pets
Visits by pets free of disease and with current vaccinations are welcomed. Please arrange such visits with the staff. Pets cannot be accommodated for lengthy visits.
Smoking
Smoking is not allowed in the facility or on the property.
Alcohol Use
Resident alcohol use is permitted if approved by the physician and the staff. The facility does not provide alcohol. The resident/family is responsible for its purchase.
Traditions and Celebrations
The staff looks forward to recognizing holidays and special events. Please make the staff aware of special days so they will not be overlooked.
Activities
Residents may go out for activities and are encouraged to do so once the staff has had the opportunity to assess mobility and safety. Residents must always inform the staff prior to leaving the facility.
Fire and Safety
Smoke detectors and a sprinkler system are located throughout the building. The staff is trained in fire safety procedures and will provide directions in the event of an alarm.
Special Considerations
Security necessitates locking the facility doors in the evening. Please make prior arrangements with a staff member for late visits. With eight residents, their families and guests calling this home, it is important to be considerate of the noise level at all times. In addition, we hope that everyone will take responsibility for keeping our beautiful facility neat and clean.
Admission
Individuals must be receiving hospice care while residing in the facility. Admission priority is given to individuals already receiving our care in another setting, then to those living in our service area, and finally to those from outside our service area.
Cost
In addition to the cost for hospice care, a daily room and board rate of $275
is charged. Questions and Concerns
Donn Diefenbacher, President/CEO, is available to answer any questions or address any concerns at (518) 725-4545.
