Mountain Valley Hospice
HISTORY IN BRIEF

November 1983
A group of concerned Fulton County citizens meet to begin exploration of the hospice concept. Following information gatherings at the state and local level, the task force decides to establish a formal organization.

June 1984
The “Fulton County Committee for Hospice Formation” officially begins and meets out of temporary office space at First Congregational Church of Christ at 33 East Fulton Street, Gloversville, NY.

September 1984
The first issue of ‘Chrysalis’, the hospice newsletter, is published.

April 1985
The official name is changed to “The Fulton County Committee for the Study of a Hospice Formation Inc.”

January 1986
The application for construction and establishment of a hospice is submitted to the Department of Health.

June 1987
The NY Department of Health accepts the application for Hospice of
Fulton County.

September 1987
The official name is changed to “Hospice of Fulton County Inc.”

June 1987
Nancy Dowd is elected Executive Director for Hospice of Fulton County.

June 1987
Hospice of Fulton County moves to 58 North Main Street, Gloversville, NY.

April 1988
The first patient is accepted into Hospice of Fulton County care.

February 1990
Hospice of Fulton County moves to 34 West Fulton Street, Gloversville, NY.

November 1990
Permission is received from the Department of Health to expand the service area to include Hamilton, Saratoga and Montgomery Counties.

July 1991
The Department of Health approves Hospice of Fulton County Inc. to assume the name Mountain Valley Hospice.

April 2000
Mountain Valley Hospice moves to 73 North Main Street, Gloversville, NY.

April 2001
Discussions begin regarding a new hospice residence and office facility.

March 2003
Mountain Valley Hospice begins a capital campaign to raise funds for a new hospice residence and office facility.

October 2003
Mountain Valley Hospice submits a ‘Certificate of Need Application’ to The Department of Health for an eight-bed hospice residence.

April 2004
The Department of Health approves the application to build an eight-bed hospice residence and new office facility at 108 Steele Avenue, Gloversville, NY.

June 2005
The new hospice residence and office complex open.

August 2005
The first hospice resident is accepted into the Hospice House.

October 2006
Executive Director, Nancy Dowd, retires and the Hospice House is renamed in her honor as the “Nancy Dowd Hospice House.”

October 2006
Carol Williams appointed Executive Director.

January 2008
Ryan Trzaskowski appointed President/CEO.

July 2010
Donn Diefenbacher, Interim President/CEO, appointed.

December 2010
Donn Diefenbacher appointed President/CEO.
